The Town of Lac La Biche is located 220 km northeast of Edmonton in one of Alberta's richest areas of natural beauty. One of Alberta's oldest communities, Lac La Biche celebrated its Bicentennial in 1998. Settlement began with arrival of David Thompson and the construction of area's first trading post. The community boasts a rich cultural history. Various waves of settlement to the area has created a vibrant multicultural community consisting of Aboriginal, Lebanese, White Russian, French, and other ethnic backgrounds. The town of 2,700 people provides goods and services to a trading area of approximately 10,000 within the surrounding Lakeland County. Surrounding Lac La Biche are many smaller communities such as the Village of Plamondon, the First Nations of Beaver Lake and Heart Lake and the Metis Settlements of Kikino and Buffalo Lake. Lac La Biche has a stable and thriving economy based primarily on the core industries of forestry, oil and gas, and agriculture. The town is located on the south end of the vast northern mixed-wood boreal forest, and in the midst of northeast Alberta's natural gas field. Rapid growth in the oilsands and forestry industries is creating new opportunities for business. Many older businesses have flourished and many new businesses have been established to meet the needs of these industries. Recreation and leisure activities are plentiful. Opportunities exist to pursue many cultural, athletic, or hobby interests through a selection of recreational facilities, clubs and groups. The town features an 18-hole golf course, swimming pool, arenas, bowling alley and movie theatre. The region's vast network of forests and natural areas provides opportunities for hiking, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing including Alberta's only mixed-wood boreal island campground. With over 200 lakes in the region all types of watersports can be enjoyed from fishing to boating and windsurfing, or just enjoying the sandy beaches.
